What is High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)? Persistent elevation of blood pressure that is over 140 systolic and 90 diastolic. It is a symptom rather than a disease and the cause is often unknown, but it may indicate change in the condition of the blood vessels or the heart muscle, or a kidney disorder, it is likely to increase during periods of rest and sleep (WHO). This means it may go unnoticed until it causes one of its later complications, such as stroke or heart attack.
