7 in 10 smokers have their first cigarette before theyre 18. To reverse that trend, the EU is proposing warning images and texts on 75% of the pack, or a ban on flavourings in tobacco. But will these measures dissuade young people? Packaging thats pink and flowery should not be allowed. We should have standardised packaging for all cigarettes. Cigarettes should taste like what they are – tobacco. So why do we still allow flavourings that allow tobacco to be more palatable? We followed Audrey during her first day of quitting. She started smoking when she was 15. Here. Go on. Hold it. Thats it. Here we are. Today is a big day. Im going to try to stop smoking. Ive smoked for 25 years, so its about time, both for my health and for my childrens environment. I dont say their health because I protect them. I dont smoke with them. Its hard to say to your child, Wait for me in the house. Mummys smoking. Among the measures taken in Belgium to dissuade people from smoking, only one seems to have had an impact on Audrey. Its much less easy to smoke now in public places, and that helps enormously. But shocking images, a ban on added flavourings and long cigarettes, the measures proposed by the European Union, leave her cold. When you smoke, you smoke. If youre a smoker, the packaging, the length or the taste of the cigarette dont matter. When youre a smoker, it has no effect. Above all, its willpower that counts. Today Audrey has decided.
